1) What is the purpose of lining the paintings?
The main purpose of lining is for the preservation of paintings. Lining protects paintings from stains, creases, breakages and strengthens the paper or silk which the art work is drawn on. These properties of lining helps to maintain art work in its best condition.

2) Why do you coat Washi with Dosa before painting?
Dosa is often coated on Washi paper before painting. This process is important in Nihonga, as it prevents the ink/paint from smudging and it also helps to retain paint on paper for longer. Therefore, many current Japanese artists prefer to have this process done before working on their piece.

3) Properties of Washi
The properties of Washi suit the climatic conditions of Japan. Washi paper breaths: soaking in moisture in humid conditions and letting moisture out in dry conditions. This gradual breathing over the years helps to settle the paint on paper, and makes the painting last for longer.

4) What kind of wood do you use in panels?
At Sukiwa Corp. we mainly use Japanese lime wood (Shina). This wood is suitable for making panels, since there is little scum and it behaves well during processing.

5) What is the meaning of SUKIWA?
Suki can be taken as like/love. As a company associated with Japanese culture, the name carries the company's wish for people to like/love Japanese 'Wa'. We hope that SUKIWA can provide a door to a world of 'Wa' for as many people as possible.
